The Ordinary

I arrived at a writer’s workshop early and decided to take a short walk before the first session was to begin. While walking, I passed a whole bunch of 'ordinary' flowers - you know the ones that everyone seems to have in their garden. I chose to take photos of the 'unusual' and 'different', noticing their beauty and splendour.

I ignored the 'ordinary'.

As I continued to walk past the 'ordinary', God reminded me of my own childhood home and how every year we would tend to these same 'ordinary' flowers.

My mum loved these flowers because they were resilient and strong. They would flower regularly and when not in flower, would remain green and healthy. These 'ordinary' flowers are what brought beauty into our garden throughout my whole childhood.

I sat on the curb and looked closely at the 'ordinary' and noticed their fine detail, vibrance, colour and perfect design.

Each 'ordinary' flower had their own 'extraordinary' features. I looked to the gardens I had walked past and saw beauty in it all. Together, the mixture of flowers brought joy, richness, and life to the street.

No flower was 'ordinary', they were all 'extraordinary'!
